03.14.09Vancouver: Interview with David DiamondHere in Vancouver, one of our World Theatre Day traditions is to have a fundraiser for our local theatre alliance. This fundraiser always has the same name: "My first time...." and theatre folks from the community volunteer to come and perform: they tell stories, perform monologues, songs and scenes related to the theme. Prior to the beginning of the fundraiser, one distinguished person from the theatre community is asked to read the WTD address. 03.08.09Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble joins the celebrationsQueensland Shakespeare Ensemble are opening up a dress-rehearsal run of Shakespeare's Shorts to the general public on World Theatre Day. Shakespeare's Shorts are fast and funny half hour versions of the original scripts, delivered with QSE's trademark clarity and accessibility. Each of the Shorts also features gentle audience participation to get everyone into the action. The Half-Hour Hamlet takes out all the procrastination - the tragedy is performed in 20 minutes, then, in 7 minutes, and again, in just 3. According to "The Hindu" which bills itself as the online edition of India's national news paper, The State government will organise drama competitions in all districts in the State on April 16 on the occasion of ‘Prapancha Nataka Dinotsavam’ (World Theatre Day). They may have a different date for World Theatre Day, but we are glad to see that they are celebrating!

02.24.09The 2008 World Theatre Day International MessageEach year, the ITI selects a figure of world stature to share thier thoughts on the theme of Theatre and a Culture of Peace. Last year, Canadian Robert LePage was selected. I have had the honour of seeing LePage's work, and let me tell you, he is definitely a 'figure of world stature.' And then some. The ITI asks that the speech be read in theatres all over the world, prior to curtain, on March 27.
